in moderation though...and I know few people who do that with any of the above.

there are soooo many things that supposedly decrease your risk of a certain kind of cancer while increasing your risk of another kind. or help your heart (in moderation) but destroy your liver or, like the high-fructose syrup cranberry juice i'm drinking right now, good for the urinary tract and good for obesity!!! so we have plenty of ammunition for justifying all sorts of conflicting behavior. thanks, science.

I heard something the other day on the radio about small doses of marajuna being good for you too! :)

I heard that thing on the radio too, but the report was sponsored by the Patchouli & Hackey Sack Association of America so I don't know how trustworthy it is.

Sherp is right. Pretty much anything in moderation (and mine might be better or worse for you and vice versa) isn't going to do any more harm than anything else. Besides, better to lived a little than not at all. :)

the trick as that "in moderation" is a tricky proposition when dealing with an addictive substance that encourages you to take it in "not moderation."

usually these studies also tend to neglect the point that the substance that gives them the health benefits (like flavinoids in red wine) are not solely in "red wine" (you can find them in grape juice).

Damian,

Well, technically we can get ALL of our vitamins and minerals from vitamins and forego eating food altogether like they do on Star Trek, but that is neither fun nor is it necessarily the healthiest way to get the benefits. I believe one study I read actually explained why wine was a better source for these benefits than juice and it had to do with the wine (thus alcohol) makine process which is not present in grape juice.

Steve, hmmm, interesting we'll have to do a study...wanna be my human experiment?
