Highschool never ends
My highschool reunion is this saturday. Yes, it's been eleven years, not 10, yes not everyone was invited because it was put together last minute by someone besides our MIA class president, and yes I am going.
Unlike fabled Hollywood movie experiences, I actually had a pretty good time in highschool. I liked most people and most people liked me. I was not class president, head cheerleader or in the drama club (although I actually did want to be in the drama club, unfortunately the kids there all seemed to be depressed goths who thought they were witches or vampires). No, I was your regular kid. Not really into anything, friends with everyone, B student. It wasn't until the summer before my senior year my dad had a talk with me and said he knew I was capable of A's and he expected them. He'd never really seemed to care before...so of course that year I got straight A's.
Then, even though I really never tried out for anything in highschool, a friend of mine convinced me to try out to give the graduation speech. They picked me. Normal, regular, nice little run-of-the-mill me. It was funny when they read the names and honors as we walked down the stage at the end. They named off the other speaker first, "Caroline Bodkin. Honors program, IB program, valedictorian, head cheerleader, blah, blah, blah." And then, "Sarah Buhr". That's it, just "Sarah Buhr". I could see people's faces in the audience, expecting them to say something about the other speaker. Surely I must've done something great, I was the speaker. Nope, nada, just "Sarah Buhr" and then we walked off the stage together.
I didn't really start to get involved in much till college. I wasn't competing for anything and just wanted to be a kid and have fun. And that's exactly what I did. I'm really excited to see everyone again.

I too loved high school. It was so easy and even though it wasn't until college when I finally figured out how easy you girls are, I had my moments! hehe.
I never heard of "speech tryouts". They just had our valedictorian, I think, give ours. Honestly, other than knowing I was there, I can't remember that much about that day, haha.
The one event I distinctly remember from graduation day was how someone made a speech and then half the guys in the audience started smoking cigars. It was so against school rules, but no one could do anything about it since it was in the middle of the ceremony. It was also the first and only time I stayed up till 6:30 am. The next day I felt like I had a hang over.
